Maximum efficiency in state-of-the-art projects

State-of-the-art trains, lighter buses, ships and aircraft, which are more comfortable and eco-efficient as a result of cork, are the projects in which Corticeira Amorim is fully involved.

The transport sector has become a priority for Corticeira Amorim, which is already a member of various consortia comprised of companies with expertise in different technological fields.

One of the company’s most recent and innovative projects involves shipping. In this case, cork plays an important role in reducing ships’ weight, thereby ensuring greater passenger comfort and environmentally friendly construction, in line with the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

An innovative cork-based primary decking, used in luxury river cruise ships built by MV WERFTEN in partnership with Wolznautic and Corticeira Amorim, makes it possible to reduce the weight of each ships by 7 tons. In addition to lightness and ease of installation, this cork composite-based solution provides greater thermal and acoustic comfort. This makes it a unique material in technical and functional terms, delivering tremendous benefits for this sector.

By land, sea and air, cork is always revealing itself for the innovation and versatility of its applications. The innovative surface metro Inspiro, designed by Siemens to be the most modern, efficient and sustainable in its class it’s a perfect example. This new metro, introduced in Poland, combines design with cutting-edge technology and uses less energy, as a result of a series of efficiency measures.

Furthermore, it offers an excellent technical performance, improved acoustics and thermal insulation."

Corticeira Amorim's solutions explore the natural lightness of cork and its acoustic and thermal insulation properties, in order to create innovative interior systems which are environmentally sustainable. They are applied as the core in structures with high technical requirements - on flooring and walls/ceiling panels, as is the case in the Inspiro, or in seating, wall partitions and other possible places.

Cork makes an important contribution to the lightness and resulting reduction in energy consumption, the durability of the structures, resistance to fire and high temperatures and its use results in increased comfort. When the requirement is eco-design, it adds value due to its versatility to adapt itself and to the environmental benefits associated with it.

But cork’s role doesn’t end here. In the field of rail transport, cork applications extend to railway infrastructures. Cork compounds are designed to be used as rail pads, baseplate, under sleeper pads and ballast mats. Available in a variety of thicknesses, these materials provide different degrees of impact attenuation for light and heavy rail transport systems, in concrete slab or ballast track, and are also used in special track locations such as rail switching devices, level crossings and viaducts.

In essence, cork efficiently meets the technical and environmental objectives which comprise the paradigm of the transport of the future, as can be seen in projects already developed with Corticeira Amorim's involvement.

ISEAT Project – the development of intelligent railway carriage seating for long distance and high speed trains, using solutions which are more integrated, lighter, comfortable and environment-friendly, such as cork.

EcoTrain Project – the development of new cork composite components for state-of-the-art trains. The cork is applied to the flooring, partitions and side panels.

IBUS Project – an innovative concept which is more eco-efficient for tourist buses. The luggage compartment incorporates a composite with a cork core, which increases resistance and reduces the weight of the luggage compartment by up to 50%. The same type of composite is applied in side panels, with improvements in thermal and acoustic insulation. The flooring, sandwiched in cork, is lighter and has better insulation properties, compared to the traditional and heavy plywood.

LIFE Project – sunder the concept of the executive aviation of the future, a cabin of an innovative, comfortable and sophisticated aircraft emerges. Solutions and cutting-edge technology are combined with natural and sustainable materials, such as leather and cork - advanced composite materials and cork leather.

Power insulation know-how

Corticeira Amorim has an experience of over forty years in supplying thermal and anti-vibration solutions to the market of electrical power and distribution transformers. It meets the most demanding requirements, be it in the development of customized polymers, in product tests or in innovative solutions adapted to each client's needs.

The result is a range of engineering products prepared for very specific and even critical applications - for example, sealing equipment subject to extreme temperatures - or even low noise equipment and anti-vibration solutions. With a long history of success of cork in transformers, reactors, wall plugs and other components, the major technical involvement and know-how of Corticeira Amorim in this field are widely recognised.

In alternative energy, cork is also the preferred solution. As a result of its lightness, natural capacity for thermal insulation and damping, it is incorporated into the blades of wind turbines.

Cork dust can also be used to generate energy. Corticeira Amorim itself meets over 60% of energy needs by using this type of biomass. Find more
