2011 was a remarkable year for the cork oak forests, for cork and for CORTICEIRA AMORIM.

During the year proclaimed International Year of Forests, at a national level the cork oak was appointed Portugal’s National Tree. At the International level, numerous opinion leaders, from a variety of fields, are describing the cork industry and cork oak forests as a genuine example of sustainable development.
This edition of the Sustainability Report outlines the main steps taken in 2011 towards a Sustainable Development.

HIGHLIGHTS:
41% Decrease in the level of carbon intensity of CORTICEIRA AMORIM’s activity on 2006
61% Use of energy renewable sources
10% Increase of the cork stoppers recycling in relation to 2010
30 Industrial and/or distribution sites with FSC chain of custody certification
667 Ideas registered by the employees within the CORK.IN Innovation Program

In 2010 cork products and solutions achieved an unprecedented level of recognition and strengthened in leading markets as high quality solutions that meet the demanding technical and environmental challenges of a wide range of different sectors.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 172 tons of used cork stoppers recycled in 2010;
  • 63% of CORTICEIRA AMORIM’s energy needs supplied by biomass;
  • 16,500 hectares of cork oak forest considered by the technical advisory service, sponsored by CORTICEIRA AMORIM;
  • 14 units with FSC certification;
  • application for registration of 18 patents from 2007 to 2010.

CORTICEIRA AMORIM, the world’s leader in an unique business in terms of Sustainable Development, published its latest Sustainability Report reaffirming its strategic commitment to sustainability within a framework of complete transparency towards the stakeholders of the Organization.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• 662 tons of cork recycled in 2009;
• 16% reduction in CO2 emissions over the previous year;
• 8000 hectares of cork oak forest included in a technical advisory programme funded by CORTICEIRA AMORIM;
• application for registration of 17 patents from 2007 to 2009;
• 11 CORTICEIRA AMORIM's units with FSC certification.
